What are the admission requirements?
For Bachelor's programmes, you need a qualifying Upper Secondary School certificate. You must also meet specific subject requirements depending on the programme, and prove your English proficiency (e.g., IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 83). Danish-taught programmes require a Danish A-level equivalent.
Are there tuition fees?
Higher education in Denmark is free for students from the EU, EEA, and Switzerland. Students from outside these areas are required to pay tuition fees, which vary depending on the specific study programme.

Entry qualification
- Transcript of Records – If you have not yet completed Secondary School, you must upload a transcript showing your current grades. You can find the transcript template here.
- Secondary School Leaving Certificate – If you have already completed Secondary School, you do not need to upload a separate transcript. Simply upload your Secondary School Leaving Certificate to the application.

- Document Deadline – All required documents must be sent to the university by 5 July.
- This deadline does not apply to applicants who will already have their secondary school diploma and final certificate at the time of application.

Entry qualification
- ECTS transcript – If you are still completing your Bachelor’s degree, upload an ECTS transcript showing the subjects you have studied, your grades, and the number of credits awarded. Your Bachelor’s diploma must be uploaded later, as soon as you receive it.
- Bachelor’s diploma – If you have already graduated, upload your Bachelor’s diploma. A separate ECTS transcript is not required.
Note: Your Bachelor’s degree must be in the same or a related field as the Master’s programme you are applying for. The university will check whether you have completed enough relevant subjects and ECTS credits.

Accommodation in Aarhus and Herning
Your housing options depend on your campus.
Aarhus: AU has no traditional on-campus housing. Student residences are spread across the city. Most homes are within a 30-minute bike ride or bus trip. Start early because demand is high.
Herning: AU Herning is located at Birk Campus - a vibrant student village with approximately 250 high-quality apartments of various sizes, just a few minutes' walk from the university. Housing is available through AU Housing and local housing organisations. The area includes a student house with café and exercise room.
How to find a place to live in Aarhus
Full-degree students can use Student Housing Aarhus. It manages student residences across the city.
Apply for several rooms at the same time.
Include homes outside the city centre.
Each residence has its own waiting list.
Central homes usually have the longest queues.
Keep backup options until you sign a contract.
You can also search through Aarhusbolig. Private rentals are another option. Never pay before receiving and checking a written contract.
How to find a place to live in Herning (Birk Campus)
AU Herning students have several housing options at and around Birk Campus - the student village located directly next to the university:
1. Through AU Housing (Birk Centerpark on campus):
Shared one-bedroom apartment (38-46 m²) - bedroom + living room with second bed, shared kitchen and bathroom. Rent: approx. 2,300 DKK/month per person including utilities and internet.
Studio apartment (27 m²) - private kitchen and bathroom. Can be shared with a roommate. Rent: approx. 3,721 DKK/month including utilities and internet.
All rooms are furnished (bed, table, chair, lamp, basic kitchenware). Laundry included.
Apply as early as possible via AU Housing - Birk Centerpark.
2. Through housing organisations (Birk Campus area - ~250 apartments):
Lejehuset - one common waiting list for three housing organisations (Fruehøjgaard, Bomidtvest, Fællesbo). Apply for Birk Campus apartments here.
Birk Campus includes 81 one-room units, 176 two-room units, and 66 additional two-room units - approximately 50 m² each.
The student village has a student house, café, exercise room, and is a few minutes' walk from AU Herning.

How much does housing cost?
In Aarhus, expect to pay between 2,500 and 4,500 DKK per month for a room in a student dormitory or shared house. Private apartments in the city centre are significantly more expensive. In Herning, housing is more affordable: shared apartments at Birk Centerpark cost approximately 2,300 DKK per person (all inclusive), studios cost approximately 3,721 DKK (all inclusive). Apartments through housing organisations at Birk Campus are also competitively priced.
Are the rooms furnished?
It depends on the type. AU Housing rooms at Birk Centerpark (Herning) are furnished with a bed, table, chair, lamp, and basic kitchenware. You only need to bring your own duvet, pillow, bed linen, and towels. Most student dormitories in Aarhus are completely unfurnished - you will need to buy your own bed, desk, and other furniture. Many students buy second-hand furniture from graduating students or visit affordable stores like IKEA and JYSK.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes, it is standard practice in Denmark to pay a deposit when signing a lease. For Aarhus, this usually equals 3 months of rent, plus 1 month of prepaid rent. For Herning (Birk Centerpark via AU Housing), the deposit is 5,000-7,000 DKK depending on the apartment type. The deposit is used to cover any damages or necessary repairs when you move out.
What is Birk Campus like?
Birk Campus is a vibrant student village located directly next to AU Herning. It has approximately 250 high-quality apartments of various sizes, a student house with café and exercise room, and is shared with VIA University College students. The campus is about 4 km from Herning city centre, easily reachable by bike or bus. It is a tight-knit international community where you quickly feel at home. The area is safe, green, and has everything you need within walking distance.
