The manufacturing industry is undergoing a major transformation. Digitalisation, globalisation, and climate challenges are transforming how products are designed, produced, and used. Companies everywhere must reduce their environmental impact, utilise resources more efficiently, and create circular value chains - all while staying ahead in a fiercely competitive market.

To thrive in this new era, engineers need more than traditional skills. They must combine deep knowledge of materials science with cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and the ability to innovate sustainably. This programme gives you the tools, experience, and industry connections to become the kind of engineer the future demands.

Learning through real industry challenges

Unlike traditional programmes, this degree is built around real industrial challenges. Students work closely with leading global companies, gaining direct exposure to current issues in modern manufacturing technology and building valuable industry connections.

Each course is designed to address real industrial problems, ensuring that your learning is practical, relevant, and future-oriented. In addition, you will have the opportunity to obtain Prime Lab Training (PLT) in selected material processing and testing equipment, as well as commercial simulation software. You will gain a holistic understanding of materials engineering and its role throughout the entire product development process - from design and development to industrialisation, production, and lifecycle analysis.

You will graduate with:

  • In-depth expertise in materials engineering and advanced production technologies
  • Skills in modelling, simulation, and optimisation to improve processes and solve complex challenges
  • Specialised knowledge in sustainable production and circular economy
  • Hands-on experience through projects and direct collaboration with industry leaders
  • The possibility to obtain endorsed Prime Lab Training on selected experimental facilities or simulation software
Important requirements

The applicant must hold the minimum of a bachelor’s degree (i.e the equivalent of 180 ECTS credits at an accredited university) with at least 90 credits in Materials and Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Product Development or Engineering Physics or equivalent. The bachelor’s degree should comprise a minimum of 15 credits in Mathematics.

After graduation, you will be highly sought after in the global job market. With strong ties to leading companies, you’ll have excellent career prospects across industries such as automotive, aerospace, energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Typical roles include:

  • R&D Manager in Materials and Manufacturing
  • Materials Engineer
  • Process Engineer
  • Product Development Engineer
  • Failure and Quality Analyst

Our graduates contribute to developing innovative, efficient, and sustainable solutions in industries that shape the world.

The programme also provides an excellent foundation for those who wish to pursue PhD studies in product development, materials engineering, or related fields - either at Jönköping University or internationally.
